Encoding and decoding a UPC-E bar code symbol

Deriving the GTIN-12 from the digits encoded in the UPC-E bar code symbol or the reverse can be performed according to the table below.

Notes:

  1. The digits at positions P1 through P5 of the UPC-E bar code symbol are represented by X1 through X5. X1 through X5 can be any digit. The X1 through X5 are then shown in the proper place for the GTIN-12 in positions D2 through D11.
  2. Re-inserted zeroes are indicated by underlining.
  3. The Check Digit is indicated by “C” and is calculated from the previous 11 digits in the GTIN-12.
  4. The leading digit in the Human Readable for UPC-E bar code symbols is always a “0”.
  5. Only 6-digit U.P.C. Company Prefixes that begin with “0” are able to create UPC-E bar code symbols.
