Barcodes

The GS1 System uses approved barcode symbologies to encode the identification numbers that uniquely identify trade items, logistic units, locations, assets, and service relations worldwide. Additional information such as best-before-dates, serial numbers, and lot numbers may also be encoded into barcodes.

Barcodes are machine readable, which are read by scanning. Scanning speeds data collection and eliminates manual data collection errors – illegible handwriting and data entry errors. The GS1 System enables users to design applications that automatically process GS1 data captured from approved barcode symbologies.
