EDI

Electronic commerce is just another link in the supply chain for GS1 BarCodes and eCom members.

Whether a company uses Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) or Extensible Markup Language (XML), GS1 Standards ensure efficient implementation and deployment.

EDI enables the computer-to-computer exchange of business documents between companies using a standard format. Even in a world of newer technologies, EDI continues as a very important technology for e-commerce. While initially focused on the larger enterprises, EDI today reaches to the small and medium sized enterprises – as there are many more cost-efficient options for its implementation.

GS1 US and GS1 Canada continue to develop and maintain implementation guidelines for X12 EDI Standards through the X12 Requirements Group (XRG).

XML enables the computer-to-computer exchange of business information between companies using XML schemas. The Global Standard Management Process (GSMP) continually maintains updated standards and implementation guidelines for this emerging technology.
