GDSN Package Measurement Rules -- GS1 Standards Document

The GDSN Package Measurement Rules establish global standards that facilitate the measurement of linear dimensions and weights for retail and non-retail products from the consumer unit to the non-consumer level and all intermediate packaging levels in between.

The package measurement rules have been updated to a new issue (1.9.2) to remove specific references to the GS1 General Specifications.  This change does not impact product measurement.

The previous change (1.9.1) which was released in September 2008, added new measurement rules, methods, and tolerances for flexible packages weighing (15) pounds or more.

Issue (1.9.1) also included textual and graphics changes intended to ensure improved understanding and implementation of existing rules.

The specific additions and changes impacted the following sections:
  • Section 4.2 Determining the Default Front of an Item
  • Section 4.4 Hanging Items
  • Section 4.5 Flexible Packaging
  • Section 4.7 Multi-Packs
  • Section 4.11 Large Flexible Packages
  • Section 6.3 Standard Tolerances for Consumer Trade Items

Note: Always download the latest version and review the changes to determine if these changes impact the current measurements of your trade items.
